Golf in Scotland was first recorded in the 15th century, and the modern game of golf was first developed and established in the country. The game plays a key role in the national sporting consciousness. The R&A, based at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, is the world governing body for the game (except in the United States and Mexico), and to many golfers the Old Course, an ancient links course dating to before 1574, is considered to be a site of pilgrimage. There are many other famous golf courses in Scotland, including Carnoustie, Gleneagles, Muirfield and Royal Troon. The world's first Open Championship was held at Prestwick in 1860. Although golf is often seen as an elitist sport elsewhere in the world, in the land of its birth it enjoys widespread appeal throughout the spectrum of society, in line with the country's egalitarian tradition. Scotland is widely promoted as the 'Home of Golf'and along with whisky and the long list of Scottish inventions and discoveries, golf is widely seen as being a key national cultural icon throughout the world.

Aberdour Golf Club

Golf with a view......
From a golfing perspective St. Andrews may arguably be the golfing centerpiece for golf in the Kingdom of Fife but throughout the Kingdom there are a number of golfing ‘Jewels in the Crown’. One of these is Aberdour. Aberdour Golf Club, although founded in 1896, did not begin developing a course at its present location until 1905. Like most courses established at that time, Aberdour was a nine hole course, with a further nine being added in 1914. Today, its 18 holes cover 5460 yards and have been laid out on land made up of ancient sea cliffs and raised beaches.

Loch Ness Golf Course

The Most Beautiful and Hospitable Golfing and Social Destination in the Scottish Highlands

If You're Looking for a Well-Earned Golf Break Among Friends, You'll Feel Right at Home at Fairways in Inverness.

When Fairways opened the Loch Ness Golf Course in 1996, its goal was to create a different type of golf destination: more a friendly bar with a golf course than a golf course with an unwelcoming clubhouse. As soon as you walk into the Loch Ness clubhouse, you instantly sense this subtle but important distinction.
