Rosslyn Chapel
1446
William St Clair, 3rd Prince of Orkney, begins to build Rosslyn Chapel.
Dedicated in 1450 as the Collegiate Chapel of St Mathew, William St Clair founded the chapel for his family with a staff of provost, six prebendaries and two choristers. Collegiate chapels like this were intended to pray for the soul of the founder and to spread intellectual and spiritual knowledge. Rosslyn`s extraordinary architecture and carvings have also inspired generations and meant its fame has endured over the centuries. |

St Magnus Cathedral
St Magnus Cathedral dominates the skyline of Kirkwall, the main town of Orkney, a group of islands off the north coast of mainland Scotland. It is the most northerly cathedral in the British Isles, a fine example of Norman architecture built for the bishops in Orkney when the islands were ruled by the Norse Earls of Orkney.
It is owned not by the church but by the burgh of Kirkwall as a result of of an act of King James III of Scotland following Orkney`s annexation by the Scottish Crown in 1468. It has its own dungeon. |

Churchill Barriers
The Churchill Barriers are a series of four causeways in the Orkney Islands, with a total length of 2.3km (1.5 miles). They link the Orkney Mainland in the north to the island of South Ronaldsay via Burray and the two smaller islands of Lamb Holm and Glimps Holm.
The barriers were built in the 1940s primarily as naval defences to protect the anchorage at Scapa Flow, but now serve as road links, carrying the A961 from Kirkwall to Burwick. |
