The Outer Hebrides (also known as the Western Isles) offer a varied contrast of landscapes from windswept golden sands to heather-backed mountains and peat bogs. There are more than two hundred islands that make up the archipelago, only a handful of which are actually inhabited. The major islands include Lewis and Harris, North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist and Barra. Much of the western coastline of the islands is machair, a fertile low-lying dune pastureland. Much of the islands is protected habitat, and this includes both the islands and surrounding waters. There are numerous rare species, including the golden eagle, basking shark, whale, dolphin, otter and corncrake. The natural environment of the Hebrides make it ideal for walking and cycling and the stunning Atlantic beaches are a magnet for surfers from around the globe. Fishing for salmon and trout, including sea angling, is also highly popular. Other activities include kayaking, powerkiting and golf. The remoteness and breathtaking natural beauty of the area makes for an ideal holiday for both playing and relaxing.
